WWI cemetaries

Around Ypres, there are many cemetaries where soldiers of the First World War are buried. One of the most striking things is the number of graves that have no name, only the inscription "Known unto God". Perhaps a third of the graves are unknown soldiers like this, and they are listed in the Menin Gate. We saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Westminister Abbey - and this unknown soldier was taken from the region around Ypres. Four bodies were proposed and one was chosen at random so that the soldier can never be identified.

We spent one day visiting some of the cemetaries. They are incredibly well maintained and many are decorated with flowers, poems, and prayers.
